What do peer health advisors do?

         Peer Health Advisors are trained on specific health issues. These health advisors are here to be educators for teens. They were trained on STD's, HIV, and pregnancy. In addition, Peer Health Advisors are:

  • Assisting with the annual Health/Career fair to be held in the spring of 2005
  • Working on the blood drive in February, 2005
  • Working on World HIV day - December 1st
  • Educating WHS faculty on blood-borne pathogens and the correct method of cleaning up blood spills
  • Working on numerous health-related projects throughout the year
  • Working on the promotion of CPR/AED training including educating students regarding the importance of the recently acquired AED equipment

Every day teens are affected by issues such as alcohol and drug abuse, domestic abuse, teen pregancy, and sexually transmitted diseases, HIV/Aids.

What is Ms. Santiago and Nurse Becky's role as a nurse?

         They are traditional school nurses, who are responsible for the peer health advisors. Their role includes the following:

  • Provision of first aid care
  • Provision of sudden illness/acute communicable disease care
  • Assure safe delivery of daily and PRN medication to students
  • Management of students with chronic illnesses such as asthma, diabetes...
